A report -- Lawrenceville Correctional Center: For-Profit Prison Run Amok --  prepared by Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP), with special assistance from Social Action Linking Together (SALT), was recently releasedThis report came to be after a months-long investigation into the egregious human rights violations reportedly taking place at Lawrenceville Correctional Center (LVCC) under the mismanagement of a billion-dollar for-profit corporation, The GEO Group

Only after many conversations with people currently or previously incarcerated at LVCC, worked at LVCC, and their family members was the report produced. The report details The GEO Group's political contributions to Virginia legislators who serve on important committees or those serving in leadership positions, ongoing citations for understaffing violations, wage theft reports, what it would cost to transfer operation of LVCC back to the state, and more.

SALT is in complete agreement with what Senator Adam Ebbin recently said in a letter to Mr. Harold Clarke, Director Virginia Department of Corrections:  “Protecting and rehabilitating individuals incarcerated is the legal responsibility of the state. Also, making certain that taxpayer money is being wisely spent in protecting and rehabilitating incarcerated persons is also the duty of the state.” The letter from Delegate Kaye Kory to the Virginia Department of Corrections likewise persuasively argues for ending the for-profit prison business in Virginia. In addition, SALT is in solidarity with the Sheriff of Brunswick County, who originally supported the LCC as an economic opportunity for the poor rural county, but has now called it a liability. The calls for help from LCC are overwhelming, according to the sheriff. The sheriff is now calling for the “transfer of management” to VADOC, just like VICPP and SALT have.
