It is critical that you take action immediately, since the Virginia General Assembly will soon be ending business and legislators will be returning home.

SALT Priority #1, Budget Amendment Item 350 #1s, supports the original purpose of TANF, which is to enable the children in needy families to be cared for in their own homes or homes of relatives.

  1. From 1996 to present, the cost of living increased 69%, but TANF payments have increased by just 43% during this time period.  TANF assistance is worth 17% less today than in 1996.
  2. In 1985, a three-person Virginian family received an average $291/month.
    • If TANF kept pace with the rate of inflation, the monthly amount would be $718.23.
    • Currently, a typical three person Virginian family receives $417/month.
  3. This amendment would increase the monthly amount by 18%
  4. Because TANF funds are federal dollars that we have saved for a rainy day, we must increase the TANF assistance because we are passing through a torrential rainstorm.
  5. Because TANF funds will help boost local economies when our lowest-income neighbors spend the money to buy necessities, buy food, and pay bills.

This is an opportunity to clearly do the right thing for Virginia's children, impoverished families, and economy.
