THANKSGIVING GREETING

The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday marks the start of the 2019 holiday season.  As you make plans to gather with your loved ones this holiday season, please take a moment to consider the many families unable to have their own holiday family gatherings because of economic hardships.

Charity and direct service to the impoverished are critical, but they are incomplete without also providing advocacy for the most vulnerable in our midst.  Motivating our advocacy is our belief that faith and action are linked together.  In the words of the late Pope John Paul II, “Our efforts to...serve the poor and vulnerable must be accomplished by concrete efforts to address the causes of human suffering and injustice."

I want to encourage all SALT advocates to be a voice for the voiceless when called upon to take actions that "address the causes of human suffering and injustice."  The Virginia election is over; now our mission is just beginning.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Say “No” to Proposed SNAP (SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) Cuts

proposed $4.5 billion cut to SNAP over five years that would make it harder for many households to afford to both “heat and eat” is open for public comment through December 2. USDA’s proposed rule would apply a less adequate assessment of SNAP households’ utility costs that in turn would lower the SNAP benefit amounts for which they qualify. Resources for submitting comments by the December 2 deadline are available on FRAC’s comment platform and on the joint comment campaign page.
