In the 2020 session of the Virginia General Assembly, many of the Committee Chairs appointed are from Northern Virginia. Committee Chairs will be critical in bending the "arc of the moral universe" toward justice. We encourage all SALT advocates to send the note of congratulations to the new Committee Chairs prepared by SALT.

Because “elections have consequences,” we anticipate a new day dawning in Virginia, and it will be critical for advocates to work with legislators in addressing the many challenges that will surely come in the 2020 General Assembly session.

SALT’s attention in 2020 will be primarily on criminal justice and TANF proposals that are listed below. We hope you, too, will consider these issues to be important and worthy of your support.

  • Lifting the lifetime federal ban on TANF;
  • Limiting prolonged Solitary Confinement;
  • Increasing Prison Pay for Prisoner jobs;
  • Eliminating Prisoner Medical Co-pays at $5.00;
  • Providing Official ID for Virginians returning from incarceration;
  • Reform Locality Groupings for the TANF Program;
  • Change the TANF Time Limit for Receiving benefits;
  • Expunge the Record of Persons with Non-Violent Record;
  • Adjust TANF Benefits by 10%.
  • More information regarding these proposals, including Fact Sheets, can be found on SALT’s web page. Read more>>
