On behalf of the 1300 SALT (Social Action Linking Together) advocates, I want to congratulate you on your appointment as a Committee Chairperson.

In light of what President Barack Obama and the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King said about justice--“the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice”--SALT looks forward to working with you and your committee on issues that will advance justice for many of the most vulnerable in Virginia.

Because “elections have consequences,” we anticipate a new day dawning in Virginia and working with you in addressing the many challenges that will surely come in the 2020 General Assembly session.

SALT’s attention in 2020 will be primarily on criminal justice and TANF proposals that I have listed below. We hope you, too, will consider these issues to be important and worthy of your support.

  • Lifting the lifetime federal ban on TANF;
  • Limiting prolonged Solitary Confinement;
  • Increasing Prison Pay for Prisoner jobs;
  • Eliminating Prisoner Medical Co-pays at $5.00;
  • Providing Official ID for Virginians returning from incarceration;
  • Reform Locality Groupings for the TANF Program;
  • Change the TANF Time Limit for Receiving benefits;
  • Expunge the Record of  Persons with Non-Violent Record;
  • Adjust TANF Benefits by 10%.

More information regarding these proposal, including Fact Sheets, can be found on SALT’s web page. Read more>>

We look forward to working with you on these critical issues during the 2020 Session.
