The Senate has an Important Opportunity to Protect Our Democracy

This week, the Senate voted 50-50, failing to overcome Senator Mitch McConnell's filibuster in a procedural vote to begin debate on S.1, the For the People Act.  Still, our work continues. The Senate must make a way to advance S.1. Sign NETWORK's letter urging the Senate to eliminate the filibuster today.

The crisis in our democracy is so much bigger and deeper than partisan politics. But what does appear to be partisan is lawmakers like Senator McConnell and Senate Republicans intentionally blocking progress. Once again, Senate Republican chose obstruction by using the filibuster -- showing us that protecting our right to vote is far from their priorities.

S.1 is popular legislation that the public wants and our country needs. Without S.1., we will see growing suppressive tactics to maintain control over our diversifying civic body. The choice is clear: either remove the filibuster or forfeit the ability to protect and strengthen our fragile democracy.
