It has come to SALT's attention that seven men currently incarcerated in Virginia's Department of Corrections are conducting a hunger strike to protest the continued use of prolonged solitary confinement in Virginia. SALT stands with  Kevin “Rashid” Johnson (1007485), Jason Barrett (1092874), Rodney Lester (1429887), Charles Cousino (2213403), Eric Thompson (1208012), Joe Thomas (1193196) and Nguyen Tuan (1098070) and their call for the Virginia Department of Corrections to abide by legislation signed into law in 2023, legislation enacted to end the use of extended isolated confinement in Virginia's prisons.

SALT is asking that VADOC put an immediate end to the extended isolated confinement -- regardless of what it is called -- of these men and all other men and women in such conditions in Virginia.

If you agree that this cruelty should end and our tax dollars should not be supporting this inhumanity that is defined as torture by the United Nations, please CLICK HERE and review the letter drafted by SALT. If you agree with what is said in the letter, please sign and send the letter to Virginia's governor and Virginia Department of Corrections officials.
