VIRGINIANS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO THE DEATH PEALTY

SALT is in solidarity with VIRGINIANS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO THE DEATH PENALTY (VADP). All SALT advocates are urged to support this effort to abolish the death penalty in our state.

Last week the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a death penalty abolition bill by a 10-4 vote.  We anticipate the final floor vote in the Senate will take place this coming Friday.  We expect to win by a comfortable bipartisan vote margin.

The next step will be passing a companion death penalty abolition bill in the House of Delegates.  Here's where we need your help.

It is URGENT that you contact your state Delegate now and urge him/her to vote for the bill sponsored by Del. Mike Mullin (HB 2263).  Click on this link to send an e-mail message immediately to your Delegate: https://www.vadp.org/2021-Alert-House-DP-Abolition-Bill/

But phone calls have an even bigger impact.  In addition to sending the e-mail above, call your Delegate's legislative office ASAP with the following message:

"Please vote YES on the death penalty abolition bill (HB 2263) sponsored by Del. Mike Mullin."

Be sure to say you are a constituent and give them your home address.

You can find out the name of your state Delegate and his/her legislative office phone number by entering your home address on this web page: https://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov/

We greatly appreciate your support for our work.  We are close now.  You can play an important role in ending the death penalty in Virginia.

Sincerely,

Michael Stone
VADP Executive Director

P.S.  On Sunday The Washington Post published a front page story headlined: Ending Va. death penalty could sweep in change. The article reported that the Commonwealth is poised to repeal capital punishment, the first Southern state to take that step. We are not quite there yet β€” we need your help.
